The Tokyo production of the stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is being produced in Japan by the world's best creative staff, who have been involved in the preceding six cities worldwide, including London, where the show premiered. Assistant Director (International) Des Kennedy has commented on the debut of the cast, who have won a rigorous audition process and have been rehearsing for more than three months.
I am very inspired by the Japanese company's wholehearted commitment to this production. Thanks to their thorough preparation before our arrival, the stage rehearsals have progressed at an unprecedented speed. We are now working on the important scenes that require a lot of concentration and skill: flying in the sky, diving under the ground, coming out of the water, lighting the fire... and it's going great! I am impressed by the precision of the Japanese crew.
There have been productions of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in seven cities so far, and each company has been able to make the most of its own unique characteristics. This Japanese version is likewise being created with the Japanese and international teams discovering together. In this respect, what makes the Japanese actors stand out is that they pour their heart and soul into the production. This makes the productions so much deeper. With centuries of Japanese theatre culture behind them, you can feel the layers of the past and the depth in their performances. The work is large in scale and full of magic, but it is the play that is at the core. I am thrilled that the Japanese actors will be able to connect to it without lying, and that it will be an absolutely wonderful production.
The opening scene begins in a train station where time is frozen. The front of the stage reads INLUSTRET LUMINE (Let the light within). For the past two years, the world has been in the darkness of the Corona disaster, each in its own isolation. Thus, with theatre back in full swing, we can come together. I feel that these words are telling us that "the light will shine in your life again."
The new theatre has an intimacy that makes you feel as if it is happening right in front of you, no matter where you sit. We hope you enjoy the experience of stepping into Hogwarts, from the carpet in the lobby to the large banners. And we hope that this play will be a catalyst for you to visit the theatre often in the future.
